"Belsnickel-German Father Christmas" by DoloresJ. Austin Bearied Treasures by Dolores...
Legend has it that in 1800's Germany, there was a man who went from house to house handing out gifts of handmade toys & cookies to the good children and switches to the bad ones.
This large, handmade/designed bear is 26" tall & made of Cream, German, Schulte mohair. He is free standing and bearded. Along with his glass eyes, I needle felted eye lids, hand painted shadowing accents for his facial features, the nose & mouth are hand embroidered, German Merino wool felt paw pads and steel shot for weight.
His navy blue faux suede pants & mohair edged cloak with hood & tassel have cream embroidery along the edges. The vest has 2 brass grizzly bear buttons and a pocket watch with fob.
There are 4 old hand made toys with the carver's signature, limited edition markings & stamped "Made in Poland". The doll is old also.
The switches are licorice roots bundled together & I antiqued the basket to carry the hand made/painted selection of cookies.
He will sell for $1495.00 at the Teddy Bear & Doll Show in DC in August.
